From Oregon to Oʻahu: The Inspiring Voyage of Sailing With Phoenix

- Our Kōkua
When Oliver Widger pointed the bow of his 32-foot sloop Phoenix toward the open Pacific this spring, he wasn’t just chasing fair winds—he was chasing a new life. Diagnosed three years ago with Klippel-Feil Syndrome, a rare spinal condition that limits neck mobility, the 27-year-old cashed out his 401(k), left an 11-year corporate career, and bet everything on the horizon—cat first-mate Phoenix curled up in the cabin.
A Dream Fueled by Adversity
- Health as Catalyst: Oliver’s diagnosis reminded him that time is a luxury. Rather than wait for retirement, he set out to live his stories now.
- First Mate Phoenix: The seven-year-old calico patrols the deck, naps on night watch, and stars in daily video logs that have made the duo internet favorites.
Crossing 2,200 Miles of Blue
Launching from Warrenton Marina at the mouth of the Columbia River on April 30, Oliver is riding the classic spring trade-wind window straight for Oʻahu. Average days clock 150-170 nautical miles, with reefed sails keeping Phoenix comfortable through rolling North-Pacific swells.
A Meteoric Rise Online
- Instagram: Snippets of rigging repairs, sunrise coffees, and cat cameos have drawn 500 k+ followers in six months.
- TikTok: Raw, unfiltered updates—like an eight-hour power nap mid-ocean—regularly top 300 k views, pushing the account past 330 k followers.
Hawaiʻi Is Waiting
Here in the Islands, we’re tracking Oliver’s AIS pings with genuine admiration for his wayfinder spirit. All of us at PHAD – Pacific Home and Appliance Distribution are cheering from shore and have an extra place at the table—fresh-caught dinner (and cat treats) ready whenever Phoenix drops anchor.
How You Can Support
- Follow @Sailing_With_Phoenix on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
- Share his updates with the hashtag #WayfinderSpirit to keep the algorithmic trade winds blowing.
- Send a note of encouragement: Nothing lifts morale on a midnight watch like a ping from land.
Oliver’s journey reminds us that the biggest barriers are often the ones we place on ourselves. As he threads the latitudes once navigated by Polynesian voyagers, we’ll be watching the horizon—ready to welcome a sailor and his cat who dared to chase the sunrise all the way to Hawaiʻi.
